The District’s efforts to incorporate sustainable designs at the new Harriton and Lower Merion high schools are paying off in a big way.

PECO representative Tom Brubaker recently presented a check in the amount of $141,000 to the District for its participation in the PECO Smart Ideas/Smart Construction initiative. The program offers financial incentives for integrating energy-efficient designs in new construction. The check amount represents a rebate based on energy conserved through the new schools’ designs. The District has reduced annual energy consumption by more than 20% above code at both high schools through features like high-efficiency lighting and improved energy management systems.

In recognizing the District, Brubaker also highlighted energy-efficient windows, insulation and lighting in the recently-renovated LMSD administration building as examples of LMSD’s commitment to reducing energy consumption.

PECO Smart Ideas offers programs to help residential, business, government, non-profit and institutional customers save energy and money. The programs are part of the company’s support of Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency and demand response targets under Act 129. Act 129 requires all state electric utilities to develop programs to help customers reduce energy use by 1 percent by May 31, 2011 and 3 percent by May 31, 2013.

Lower Merion School District is deeply committed to supporting sustainability in the school community. From LEED-certified buildings to K-12 environmental education programs, an award-winning green cleaning program to the nation's largest fleet of school buses fueled by compressed natural gas, the District strives to be a model for responsible environmental stewardship.
